Door count
One-door units suit narrow cafes, backup storage, and lower cover counts when deliveries are frequent. Two-door reach-ins are the default for full-service kitchens because one section can hold raw or prep inventory while the other supports service pulls. Three-door cabinets only make sense when case volume, shelf separation, aisle width, and delivery clearance all justify the larger footprint.
Compressor placement
Top-mount compressors are useful in dusty, hot, or wet kitchens because the mechanical package sits away from mop water, flour, and floor debris. Bottom-mount compressors can improve lower-shelf access and may run in slightly cooler air near the floor, but restaurants should confirm coil-cleaning access and avoid boxing the intake beside cooking equipment.
Solid vs glass doors
Solid doors usually make more sense for ingredient storage, prep overflow, and back-of-house inventory because they hide clutter and reduce light and heat gain. Glass doors are worth considering for merchandised drinks, grab-and-go cases, or teams that repeatedly open a cabinet just to check stock.
Reach-in vs undercounter
Undercounter refrigeration is point-of-use storage, not bulk capacity. Use it at a bar, sandwich rail, or tight prep station when the main problem is walking during service; add upright reach-in capacity when menu complexity, delivery gaps, or separated raw and ready-to-eat storage become the bigger constraint.
Operating cost note
Energy Star signals, door discipline, clean gaskets, and kitchen temperature can matter over years of operation. A busy line that opens the door every few minutes can erase some efficiency gains, while a well-loaded cabinet with clear condenser airflow may cost less to run than a cheaper unit under stress. Exact cost still depends on local electricity rates, staff behavior, ambient heat, and how often the unit recovers from door openings.
